PHET Magnetism – Lab Grade Part I: 1. Go to http://phet.colorado.edu 2. Click on electricity and magnetism sims. 3. Select the simulation “Magnets and Electromagnets.” It is at this link http://phet.colorado.edu/new/simulations/sims.php?sim=Magnets_and_Electromagnet s 4. Move the compass slowly along a semicircular path above the bar magnet until you’ve put it on the opposite side of the bar magnet. Describe what happens to the compass needle. The compass needle keeps rotating in a clockwise direction as the compass moves in a semicircular path. 5. What do you suppose the compass needles drawn all over the screen tell you? It tells about the direction of the magnetic field 6. How is the strength of the force/torque on the compass needle indicated? The strength is indicated by the number of rotations the compass needle makes and the speed of the compass needle. 7. What are the similarities between the compass needle (magnetism) and a test charge (electricity)? They both repel like charges and attract opposite charges. They both have directional, magnetic and electric field. 8. Move the compass along a semicircular path below the bar magnet until you’ve put it on the opposite side of the bar magnet. Describe what happens to the compass needle. The red part of the needle faces the south pole of the magnet and the white part of the needle faces the north pole of the magnet and continues to spin and maintain the position as the compass is moved around. 9. The Zing Corp. has recently bought two pieces of land: one southwest of the Town of Windsor and one in the Tatamagouche area (see maps attached). You have been hired to select a building site for their new Resort based on radioactivity and environmental considerations. For background on the site selection you must describe what kind of uranium enrichments (mineralization/deposits) are present on each of their properties and explain how they formed. Pick one of the properties that you think would make a more favourable site (contrast the two properties and justify your decision to pick one over the other). Pick an area within your chosen property boundaries to place the resort (place it on the map). Justify why you picked this location(use the internet for some of the information). What work would you perform on the area in order to pick the ultimate site. After the resort is constructed what measures would you take to limit radon in the buildings. The resort will need to drill wells for a water supply, what problems might be expected in regards to water quality? How could they be fixed (mitigated)?
