1. What is Carroll saying about the nature of rhetorical analysis? How do the
fundamentals of rhetorical analysis figure into your life, both as a student and as a
citizen? Describe a pair of specific examples in which these concepts might play (or
have played) a role in your participation in those areas.
ANSWER: Carroll describes rhetorical analysis as the consciousness and judgment of our
surrounding. For example, we encounter rhetoric and practice it daily without knowing. The
moment we make a snap judgment about others based on the clothes they wear or their
walking style or even the kind of company they hang out with, we are making a rhetoric
analysis (Carroll, 2010).
As a student we also make judgment if a new student or a new teachers steps in our
classroom. We judge the way they walk, talk, smile, wear and carry them. We also discuss
it with our friends and make rhetorical judgments based on how that person looks like.
As a customer care officer, we do a rhetoric analysis every time a new customer reports in
the hall. We would judge him or her from the clothes, jewelry, shoes or even their walking
style and sometimes discuss it with our colleagues too. Typically, most of us would have a
negative attitude if the person does not follow the conventional way of dressing. As the
saying goes, "the first impression means a lot" people make a rhetoric judgment based on
how one presents him or herself (Carroll, 2010).
For example, I have realized that whenever I put on a particular dress, shoes and put on a
specific hairstyle, I'm likely to have more attention from people and have passed interviews I
didn't think I qualified than other hairstyles, clothes, and shoes
