1. Define Tissue
- A tissue is a group of cells, in close proximity, organized to perform one or more
specific functions.
2. The 4 basic types of tissue, their functions, classifications
- Epithelial tissue creates protective boundaries and is involved in the diffusion of ions
and molecules.
- Connective tissue underlies and supports other tissue types.
- Muscle tissue contracts to initiate movement in the body.
- Nervous tissue transmits and integrates information through the central and peripheral
nervous systems.
3. Tissue membranes
- is a thin layer or sheet of cells that covers the outside of the body (skin), organs
(pericardium), internal passageways that open to the exterior of the body (mucosa of
stomach), and the lining of the moveable joint cavities.
4. Tissue damage and inflammation
- Inflammation is one of the primary responses of the immune system to harmful stimuli, such
as infection or tissue injury. The symptoms of inflammation are caused by increased blood
flow into tissue that carry along immune factors predestined to eliminate the initial cause of
the distress.
5. Tissue repair
- is defined as the restoration of tissue architecture and function following an injury. In
toxicant-induced injury, tissue repair plays a primary role in determining whether the
patient will recover from injury, or whether the injury will progress and lead to death.
