Introduction
Logistical considerations play a critical strategic role in business. Among wholesalers and
retailers, they go beyond inventory management and transportation to include location in terms
of markets or sources of supply. For manufacturers, logistics is concerned with factors as basic
as plant location, raw material sourcing, and customer service standards. With the recent drastic
transformations in the business environments, companies have been impelled to relook how their
logistical operations relate with other organizational functions for business success. Logistics
particularly plays a crucial role in procurement, operations, and distribution.
Logistics and Procurement
Both the internal and external supply chains of a business need proper integration in order
to achieve optimal business success. Organizations that closely integrate their procurement
processes and logistics functions deliver better business outcomes.
Procurement logistics involves sourcing materials requisite for the manufacturing of
products. This includes purchasing raw materials, replacing parts, auxiliary supplies, operating
supplies, and other items necessary for the manufacturing process to function (Iastremska, 2018).
Further, procurement logistics includes storage, organizing, and shipping of the materials to and
from the warehouse. The business team in charge of procurement logistics also has the
responsibility to source and select product policies, terms and conditions, communication
channels, and purchasing strategies that aid in keeping the acquisition cost as minimal as
possible.
The flow of procurement logistics must be open and uncongested since any inhibition to
purchasing can interrupt production efficiency and product storage. The resultant delays can
