RELEVANCE OF FAMILY ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS 2
Introduction
For some time now, the prevalence of single-parent families in the United States has
taken the shape of an upward trajectory. This trend has been mirrored by a consequential decline
in marriage rates and a dramatic rise in divorce cases (Reynolds & Profile, 2020) begging the
question, is the conventional basic structure of our society slowly losing relevance? As salty as
divorce is in most cases with regard to the disintegration of a once impregnable bond between
the two parents, this new age has seen most parents considering it as the easier route (Reynolds
& Profile, 2020). The case below highlights this reality and brings to light some of the
detrimental effects of divorce that go beyond the parents.
Key problems and Rationale
Janie, a 34-year-old divorcee, is a mother of three who presently struggles to cope with
depressive episodes that manifest in the form of her being overwhelmed with parenting duties.
Her children, 7-year-old Chloe and four-year-old Devin, display oppositional defiant disorder
symptoms. Chloe, in particular, has been reported to exhibit constant shows of aggression and
irritability both at home and in school. Like most psychological disorders, the exact cause of
oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is not known. However, environmental factors like
inconsistent parenting and neglect, such as in the case of Janie's family, have been heavily linked
to ODD (Cavanagh et al., 2017).
Like in most divorce cases, financial instability adds to the long list of problems Janie's
family is facing. As a full-time parent, Janie solely relies on child support from her ex-husband
to sustain the family's needs. According to her, this is insufficient and does not meet all the
family's financial needs.
