Task 1: Innovative and Strategic Thinking
Course Code: D081
A1. Discuss how ALL of the following aspects from the scenario affect the company’s decision-
making process (Unit 3: Module 2)
1. Company culture
This company’s culture is a driving force behind their decisions and business activity. The scenario
describes their culture as one of innovation. They foster innovation by offering employees incentives for
ideas and have created labs where customers can use and evaluate products, offering ideas for
improvements. The company’s culture shines through as they develop their new foldable boat in India:
Leadership has decided to include local fishers in the design and testing of their product.
2. Organizational structure
The company has a decentralized organizational structure. Leadership has an open-door policy where
employees are concerned and are available for collaboration, to assist with decision making, and for other
personal reasons. This is shown in their openness to partner with the National Fisheries Development
Board to ensure Indian standards are met regarding product materials and preservation of the ecosystem.
3. Mission and vision statements (as they affect the strategic direction)
It appears that this Company takes its Mission and vision statements seriously. Their mission statement
is: “We will provide the most innovative, customer-driven design and growth in the industry.” They are
doing exactly this as they bring a new, economical, foldable fishing boat to the fishers in India. Their
vision states that they, “will be the most sustainable company in the industry.” This is shown by
employing local people, by using recycled materials in their product, including their customers in design
activities, and preserving traditional non-mechanical fishing styles that have little to no environmental
impact.
A2. Describe how the company’s culture could affect the market entry strategy. One explanation
will suffice. (Furthermore, what type of culture is the company? Use the Competing Values
Framework article below to explain your answer.)
Analyzing this company through the lens of the Competing Values Framework shows it has a Clan, or
Collaborative culture. Leaders function as mentors with communication and development placed highly
in their organizational values. In this case, having a collaborative culture will be of great benefit to

market entry. The fishers in India are mostly traditional in their use of non-mechanized equipment and
their desire to maintain their ecosystems. This company’s transparency with the local people will serve
them well. Their customers will respect their use of locally used recyclable materials and will appreciate
the dedication to environmentally friendly processes. The company is set up well to succeed in this new
market.
A3. Discuss in detail whether the organizational structure is an advantage or disadvantage to the
company and explain why. (Unit 4: Module 4)
The Flat, or horizontal, structure of this organization is an advantage in its industry. Having few barriers
or levels of management between leaders and employees is a benefit in this type of manufacturing. Ideas
and innovation are encouraged and when a design change is implemented, the new information is
received more quickly and efficiently. By having employees directly involved in the decision making
process we have employees with a strong sense of ownership who will work hard to achieve the desired
results that they themselves have defined.
B1. Describe specific characteristics of the emerging market that affect the product from the
provided scenario. (At least two.) (Unit 3: Module 2)
The company’s decision to build this business in India is a wise one as India is one of the most rapidly
growing emerging markets. The first characteristic the makes India a good choice is its growth in
manufacturing. As the country is already focused on new manufacturing, this company will be well-
received. Using local people and facilities to manufacture the boats using locally used plastics has a
much better chance of success than simply exporting products to India.
Another characteristic that will be beneficial to our foldable boat manufacturing company is the political
stability and economic growth India is experiencing. With India being the largest democracy in the
world, the likelihood of governmental seizure of assets or ban on foreign investments is slim. Further, the
existing regulations, such as requiring the recycling of locally used plastics in production, are unlikely to
drastically and suddenly change. Having a growing economy will provide more customers for our
products, which will bring a strong return on our investment in India.
B2. Based on the emerging market characteristics from B1, discuss in detail how either a new
product or improvement to the existing product would meet both market needs from B1. Please be
specific. (Unit 2: Module 1)
Choosing to manufacture and sell these boats in India will be mutually beneficial to our company and to
the local people. We will be investing money into India and growing their economy. We will also be
investing in the people of India and local culture. Our company will provide jobs for local Indians,
teaching them skills that will help improve and grow other manufacturing industries in the area. Our boat
is relatively inexpensive, as well as foldable, which means that a large vehicle is not required to transport
it to the water. These aspects will allow more people, who may not have jobs or access to vehicles, to
become productive fishers.
