Ozone [ O3 ] Structure of Ozone : Some physical properties of Ozone     Light blue colored gas . Slightly soluble in water. Heavier than air (specific gravity = 1.660 at NTP ) Produces headache, nausea, when inhaled in small amount. If inhaled excess, the person may die.  Boiling point = - 112 °C Occurrence of Ozone ( Above 720 km) ( 80-720 km ) ( 50-80 km ) ( 15-50 km ) ( 0-15 km) However, thickness of ozone layer varies seasonally and geographically.  Amount of Ozone in Stratosphere is normally expressed in Dobson Unit.  Normally, there is 300 Dobsons of ozone in stratosphere. Formation of Ozone in Stratosphere Preparation of Ozone Ozone is prepared by passing silent electric discharge through pure and dry oxygen gas at low temperature in a apparatus called ozoniser. Fig: Siemen’s Ozoniser Ozone layer depletion  Significant thinning of ozone layer in stratosphere is known as ozone layer depletion.  Ozone layer depletion is most pronounced in the polar regions, especially over Antartica. Ozone Hole The region in the stratosphere (or, more specifically ‘ozonosphere’ ) where the concentration of ozone is significantly low is called ozone hole. Causes of Ozone layer Depletion 1. Chloroflurocarbons [CFCs] / Freons Examples: • CF2Cl2 (Dichlorodifluoromethane) • CF3Cl (Chlorotrifluoromethane)…..etc. 2. Haloalkanes Examples: • CCl4 (carbon tetrachloride) • CH3Br (methyl bromide) • CH3CCl3 (methyl chloroform)… ...
