DQ1

One of the goals of GCU is to help you to communicate effectively throughout your life. Review the

"Communication Tool." Why is it important to communicate effectively with others? How will effective

communication help students in their academic career? Give examples. Why do you think GCU emphasizes

quality discussion posts and proper etiquette in the Discussion Forums?

Communication is something that we all need to understand as well as use

throughout our entire lives. Having proper communication will not only help us in

our daily lives but also help us professionally. Understanding proper

communication will allow you to understand when you need to step back and

properly digest the information that you received and understand how to properly

communicate your point across. I know for me I am quick to say something and

then realize that I shouldn’t have said it. Once something is said it is hard to take it

back. Throughout college we will be responding to other student’s discussion and

making sure we respect others and learning how to interact with other students will

help us in the future to communicate professionally. I believe that GCU emphasizes

proper communication to help prepare us for the future and teach us to be

respectful of other student’s opinions. We will not agree with what everyone says

but we do need to respect each other.

What is Title IX and how does it affect you as a student?

Title IX is a federal law that prohibits sex and gender based discrimination in the

education system. Title IX was created for the safety of the students and staff of

GCU. We should all be treated equally and respect each other. In the beginning I was

trying to come up with a reason on how it would affect me as an online student. I

was recently responding to another students and what a student said really made it

click. The student was explaining how other students will see a name and “popping

over to any number of social media sites and searching up fellow students”, that

really resonated with me and now I understand how online students could be

affected and how Title IX will protect them. I understood the aspect of the gender-

based discrimination, but not sexual harassment. As an online student we will be

posting and replying to many discussion while we are in our degree program. We

will not all agree on the same points, however we all need to understand that

regardless we need to agree to disagree. The Title IX will ensure that we will not be

harassed, that if a fellow student does decide to find another student on social media
