The stages of child and adolescent development are important for teachers to understand
the different instructional strategies that come with being a teacher. Each child learns and
progresses differently and it is important for teachers to understand and recognize the milestones.
All age groups go through these developmental stages, cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional
and physical. Understanding the milestones will make you a better teacher, learning to recognize
these stages will allow you as a teacher to help the child through that milestone.
Cognitive Stage
Children need to interact with each other to help their cognitive development,
instructional strategies are favored that encourages peer teaching and social negotiation during
problem solving” (Driscoll, 2005, p235). When children are playing together at a learning center
they help each other out to understand the lesson they are being taught, it is important to allow
the children to learn from one another. Every child learns differently and this allows them to
solve the problems on their own and with each other.
Linguistic Stage
Once a child starts school the teachers will recognize if there are any speech delays, if
there are the teachers will reach out to the school and parents. During the linguistic stages of
development for K-1

grade it is important to get the kids in a classroom, many times parent
speak to their child as a baby instead of as an adult. Great example is a friend of mine has a 2-
year-old son, he already has a very hard time speaking as it is, and instead of asking him “do you
want water”, she says “do you want wawaa”. This right here hinders your child; they need to be
spoken to as an adult not a baby. Children pick up on these words and use them instead of
speaking clearly. Reading to your child is important prior to them going to school. Teachers
know this, and they do this daily, as a teacher I want to teach Kindergarten and I will have a
