Stages of Child and Adolescent Development for Grade Levels

There are many concepts, principals and theories that teachers can follow when they enter
the world of teaching. Each teacher will need to figure out which one they want to follow and
implement into their classroom. Some of the theories were from Jean Piaget, which he believed
in Cognitive development, cognitive development describes adaptation through assimilation,
balancing, and accommodating behaviors, (Lefrancois, 2012). The Montessori Theory was
developed my Maria Montessori, this approach is learning development in which the teachers
allow independence, observation, correcting the child when needed, a prepared environment and
absorbent mind (Isaacs, 2007).
Understanding the unique aspects of development will allow me to recognize my
student’s academic abilities as well as their different learning abilities. Being a teacher it is my
duty to make sure all my students are learning what they need for the grade level they are in.
Recognizing when a student is behind or if a student is excelling is important for me to adjust my
lesson plans for each of my students. All children learn differently, each child should have their
own lesson plan based off their learning style. I really related to this quote I read, “the idea of
development entails the existence of an endpoint: the child moves, steadily or erratically, toward
a goal” (Kaplan, 1967, cited in Kessen, 1984, p 209). When a student sees the end goal it will
give them something to look forward. Great example is a reward system, if a child knows they
are being rewarded they work for harder for that reward. We do need to make sure that the
reward is within reach for all students.
Stages of development differ for each age group based on their age and maturity.
Children remember what they learned, if a teacher reads the children a story it’s important that
they ask them questions about what they remember from the story. Asking about the beginning,
middle and end will help the children remember the parts of the story. With doing so they will
