1. What can teachers do to facilitate meaningful discourse among peers in the

classroom? Provide an example of an experience a student may have outside the

classroom that may help his or her peers understand a newly introduced concept.

We were a military family for 20 years. We have lived in 5 states and South Korea. The

last place we lived was in Alaska, I have gotten so many questions about Alaska and it

makes for a great conversation in the classroom. The experiences we have had living all

over the place is so beneficial for me in the classroom. Being able to use my life

experiences allow to me interact with the kids as well as teach them at the same time.

When you’re in a classroom and the kids are enjoying the lesson they remember that

lesson. When the students are having fun and can relate to a lesson, the day goes by so

much faster and the kids don’t get bored. I really loved it when parents ask me about my

experience in Korea and the Philippines.

Thank you. Being able to tell my student’s all the place I have seen and been has been

very beneficial. I couldn’t tell you how many parents have asked me questions about my

stories. Being able to interact with the kids and mostly have fun really helps the kids

learn and they retain that information. Getting kids to retain information is one of the

hardest things to do, but once they know it they know it forever. I remember when we

moved back to Illinois from Alaska and my kids started school here. My niece and

nephew go to the same school and were very excited about us moving home so they told

everyone how we were moving here from Alaska. Once my kids got here they were

asked constantly are you the one that moved here from Alaska? Then they would be

bombarded with questions about Alaska, it was cool because it was a way for my kids to

make friends with others. I still get asked about Alaska and we have been here 2 years

now.

Great Post Christine, I love that you took your kids to so many National Parks. We were

a military family for 20 years, we have went on so many trips and different places. My

kids use to enjoy going all over the place. The last place we lived in was Alaska, they

actually went to a Native school and learned so much about the Alaskan culture. They

would go on weekend camping trips, learned how to make fire, cut wood, etc. We also

lived in Korea for 2 years and they learned about Korean culture. We like to take family

trips all over in order to educate our kids. When we went to the Philippines, we went

through some very low-income areas and it really made our kids think about what they

have. Showing your kids and teaching your kids different things is very beneficial for

them in the long run. They may not realize it now but they eventually realize it. Being a

military family has really allowed our kids to see so many amazing things, learn so much

about other cultures and how others live.
