Written by William Shakespeare, in around 1590 to 1594, The Taming of the Shrew is a
play that explores the courtship and love story of a shrewish woman by the name Katharina
(Kate) and a canny gentleman known as Petruchio. In the play, Kate is portrayed as a beautiful
but high-tempered woman, while Petruchio is a funny and determined gentleman who is bent on
subduing Katharina’s temper and winning her heart (Brunvand, 2015). The plot of the story
describes the courtship between Kate and Petruchio. Initially, Kate is unwilling to get involved in
a relationship with Petruchio, but eventually, Petruchio tames her using several psychological
torments such as preventing her from eating and drinking until she becomes a compliant

In the book, Katherina is deemed unsuitable for marriage due to her character. However,
Petruchio considers her character interesting and decides to marry her. During their wedding
ceremony, Petruchio strikes the priests and drinks the communion wine, after which he takes her

nothing is good enough for her wife. According to Petruchio, well-cooked meat is overcooked in
her wife's eyes, a stylish and beautiful dress is not fashionable enough for her, and a classy hut
does not fit her. Petruchio also disagrees with everything his wife says, making her agree with
Petruchio's statement, even the most absurd ideas. During their journey to the wedding of Kate's
