Why Are More American Teenagers Than Ever is a cover story in the New York times
magazine written by Benoit Denizet-Lewis, which was the magazine's most-read story of 2017.
The author is a writer for the New York Times, an author, and a professor of publishing,
literature, and writing, working at Emerson College. Mr. Benoit interviews several Psychologists
and therapists to determine the cause of anxiety in teenagers; He also examines how different
institutions handle the matter, from high schools to private institutions that deal with mental
health disorders.
The author follows Jake, a boy in his junior year in high school, and his struggle with
anxiety, from attempted suicide to recovery in a residential treatment facility. One of the causes
of the stress that the author proposes is social media, where most teenagers are constantly
comparing themselves to their peers. Another cause of stress is cyberbullying that the writer
illustrates through one of the teenagers he spoke to called Jillian, another youth that also attended
Mountain Valley.
Benoit also criticizes schools and some parents and asserts some treat the students as too
frail to face anything that conflicts with their worldview. This is further emphasized by Lyon, as
the therapist says that the 504 plan in schools, however helpful, is usually taken advantage of as
Students can leave the class anytime they feel anxious and can return when they want. More
and more students struggle to recover from minor setbacks and aren't equipped to problem solve
or advocate for themselves effectively,” one of the school counselors in Oregon told Mr. Benoit.
