I chose to watch a video on the social network for this assignment on ethics. My interest in this
movie was to understand more about how the idea of two twins was stollen. I once watched the
movie about six years ago, so by watching it again, I will understand the sequences of events
during the launching of Facebook.
The central ethical conflict from this movie plot was the money. When Mark Zuckerberg realized
that the social network had a lot of money, he decided to cut off Eduardo (his best college friend),
and at last, he reduced his shares to 0.3 percent. Due to this event, mark was sued by Eduardo, who
had raised money to finance the project.
The behavior of mark and others greatly impacted Eduardo. This is because the Facebook project
contained a lot of feuds and was controversial. Eduardo was affected by the fact that his shares
were reducing throughout after signing a contract that he didn't understand. Also, both of them had
different opinions. Firstly, Eduardo wanted to sell his share to get money, while Mark Zuckerberg
was not for that idea since the platform would lose its meaning and popularity even though they
were great friends. Mark Zuckerberg continues making money as the company grows bigger and
bigger and consequently ranked among the top 10 wealthiest people globally. This conflict resulted
in the suing of Mark Zuckerberg by Eduardo, who claimed that mark Zuckerberg spent Facebook
money on his expenses in the summer.
Some of the characters in the movie plot lost their friendships, for example, Zuckerberg and
Eduardo, because they had different opinions about the Facebook platform. Mark Zuckerberg
betrayed his friend, Eduardo, by cutting him off from being part of the social network platform
even though he was the financial officer who funded the project. Trustworthiness between
Winklevoss twins and Zuckerberg was also lost. The twins trusted Zuckerberg with their idea of
Harvard online connections, but Zuckerberg went ahead and used their idea to develop another
platform, Facebook. The character was compensated at the end after making an ethical decision
about their case. Winklevoss twins, for instance, ended up getting 65 million dollars while Eduardo
was given an undisclosed amount to settle the conflict.
If I were under the CFP board of ethics, I would have considered fairness in sharing of profits yield
by the company. Eduardo's shares diminished almost to nothing, while those for others remained
unchanged. Also, I would have considered honesty. Mark Zuckerberg was not honest to Eduardo
and made him sign a contract he had no idea about, which led to the lost of his shares.
Some actions made by characters in this movie can relate to me in certain aspects, for instance, the
act of the twins taking the case to court. It isn't very pleasant to realize that someone uses your
idea to generate money without acknowledging you. Taking the case to the supreme court was
right for such behaviors portrayed by Mark Zuckerberg. If I were the twins, I could have done the
same thing because I cannot allow my intellectual property to be stolen. Mark Zuckerberg's
behavior does not relate to my behaviors because I could not have cut off a friend who helped me
develop the project. It was a poor decision, even if he was going for fame. In the movie, there is a
part where Eduardo was trying to get attention in the business from mark and others because he
felt like he was ignored on essential matters. I cannot imagine cutting off my friend who helped
me when the project finally yielded. Even though I don't have much money, my ethics can't allow
me to do what mark did to his college best friend.
If Mark Zuckerberg had been a member of the CFP Board Code of Ethics, he would have done
things differently. He would have complied with the first code of ethics, which is honesty. Mark
