How to Prevent People from Dropping out of School
The percentage of high school dropouts and early school leaving is very high around the
world. It has become an issue of Global interest rather than specific countries. In 2013 in
Hungry, those who started secondary school but finished it without qualification were around
11%, similar or even higher in other European countries (Publication, 2018). This paper
discusses parent support, guidance and counselling and governments' involvement in youth
school dropout prevention.
Parents should give motivational support to their children to prevent them from dropping
out of school. Most children lack personal motivation following previous failures in the system.
They do not know successful learning methods, and a lack of connection between students and
their teachers could lead them to drop out of school. Parents should start by showing their
children they care about their homework. Engage the children in what they learnt in school.
Parents should keep in touch with their children teachers; ask about the children's progress and
their school behaviours. Positive reinforcement methods, such as rewarding the kids or praising
them upon completing a challenging task, should be used. Parents should keep tabs on their
feelings, too (Cohen, 2021). If they get very frustrated or angry about the school performance of
their children, a therapist or support group could help.
Guidance and counselling is another method to prevent teenagers from dropping out of
school. Drug and substance abuse is a massive problem in society. School going children have
always fallen victims to this problem. If a child gets introduced to drugs, they will become
addicted and drop out of school. Peer pressure also contributes to school dropouts. A child can be
influenced negatively by their age mates or introduce them to unruly behaviours, which will
eventually lead to them dropping out of schoolan increase in the crime rates and racism
