Introduction
Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart high appreciated musical masterpiece,
have stood the test of time. The two composers, along with Beethoven who was a student of
Haydn at one time, are considered to be the greatest composers ever in Classical music
development during the 18
th
century. Classical music of this era was characterized by the
symphony, string quartet, concerto and opera styles. History recognizes Haydn as a composer
who was resourceful and creative. Despite receiving such significant credit, Haydn still
continues to be overshadowed by Mozart which makes one question whether Mozart was
more talented than Haydn or he contributed more to classical music.
The accomplishment and innovation of the two composers cannot be covered only
through talent. They left behind a musical legacy that was founded on the capability to put
together formal training, experience, motivation and inspiration, hard work, and taking
advantage of the right moments in the lifetime. Societal perception of music is quite
controversial; some individuals judge music quality on the basis of the music alone, while
other gain insight about music quality by looking at both the music and the environmental
conditions of the composer when he composed the song. The latter gives a better
understanding of music and it is using this approach that we compare and contrast Haydn and
Mozart, not only by looking at the music but also their conditions they faced in life that
inspired them to be such great classical composers.
