Anorexia and Bulimia
Anorexia and bulimia are some of today’s most widespread eating disorders, especially in
developed countries. These disorders can be caused by a myriad of conditions such as
biochemical factors, genetic factors, psychological factors, and cultural and environmental
factors. Many of today’s eating disorders are highly influenced by the last of these facts. The
culture and environment that people grow into more often than not dictate standards that
individuals are expected to live by (Mashalpourfard, 2018). Both anorexia and bulimia are
characterized by the need to keep low weight and avoid getting ‘fat.’
The motivations or social pressures for one to be thin are usually associated with the
entertainment industry, where narratives of what is beautiful and what is ugly are typically
passed. An excellent example of this can be seen in the types of media that people consume in
society. Many movies, music videos, video games, and television shows present certain body
types as desirable (Gaffney, 2017). What might seem innocent and harmless goes a long way in
shaping people's outlook as they grow up. When a person is a grown-up, they only want to
identify with certain body types as that is what society has sold to them as acceptable and
alluring. Most people working in the fashion industry face this problem. In many African
cultures, the issue of body types does not matter. A lot of people regard plus-sized individuals as
the epitome of material wealth or physical beauty.
