What are the principal differences between business strategies and functional tactics? Why
are these differences important?
Functional tactics are different from business strategies in three ways; specificity, time
horizon, and the participants who develop them.
To elaborate on specificity, functional tactics “identify the specific activities that are to be
undertaken in each functional area.” This allows the managers of the specific business units to
strategize how they will pursue in reaching the goals of the company. For example, in my
particular company, we are provided the goals (strategy of the company) and our particular
business unit must work out the details to ensure that we meet those goals. For instance, the
corporate strategy is to heighten customer satisfaction. At our business unit, we identify ways to
assist in providing better customer service and allow us the flexibility in meeting those
requirements. Things are done differently from one business unit to the next and it is important
that the site leaders optimize the sites strengths to meet those goals.
Whereas business strategies are designed to be accomplished within 3-5 years, the time horizon
factor for functional tactics is for the “now” or the immediate future.
The participants differ obviously from the business units and the leaders who are designing the
overall business strategy. The site manager must develop a strategy that is aligned with
corporate goals and operating managers must create goals that are aligning with the site itself.
The key to all of these functionalists in being successful is to ensure that communication and
accountability are very prevalent to ensure that the overall business strategy and goals are
achieved.
