Annunciation and Visitation, Jamb Figures from Reims Cathedral, 1230-1255 Gothic
Theology played a critical role in renaissance and medieval artworks, with popular
themes associated with the annunciation. Necessarily, the annunciation in biblical scriptures
is where the angel Gabriel informed Mary that she would conceive Jesus, the son of God.
Annunciation works, therefore, focus on the spiritual aspects of Christ’s existence, leaving
out his toils and the gory crucifixion details. Various artists explored the annunciation story,
realized in different media including mosaics, frescos, painted oils, and sculptures, reflecting
their predilections and cultures at various times. The annunciation and visitation jamb figures
from Reims Cathedral, 1230-1255, are one such artwork, represented in two pairs. The left
pair depicts the annunciation where the angel breaks the news to Mary, while the right one
shows the visitation, including Mary and her cousin Elizabeth. It is categorized as gothic art,
with jamb statues made during the medieval period (Reims Cathedral, n.d.). Some of the
learning points from this discourse include the visual description and context analysis of the
art, including the cultural values, social and political systems, and their relevance in the
specified work.
