DOI 10.1007/s10869-011-9221-x There have been reports of increased assessment of social networking sites (SNSs) like the utilization of Facebook in workforce recruitment by human resource departments and hiring boards. They utilize the sites to locate and analyze detailed information about job seekers. The authors try to analyze reasons behind this idea and whether there is any advantage gained from using the SNSs techniques. They start by defining what Social Networking Sites are and then go to examining the risks associated with over-depending on SNSs by employers, the validity of using them and the legal implications of such a method. The authors indicate the fact that SNSs can give a considerable amount of information about a person of interest. However, there are factors that need to be considered like the default privacy settings that allow or prevent access to information.
