This resource examines four recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings related to controversial issues in the criminal justice arena. You may also select your own issue.Next, identify and utilize a problem solving strategy after reviewing the Problem-Solving Strategies and Sample document. You may also use your own strategy. Additionally, you need to identify and analyze an evidence-based practice that will be most effective in dealing with the issue you selected. The articles have been attached as well. 1) Dartivous Latimore- Official crime data derives “from the normal functions of the criminal justice system; this includes police reports of offenses and arrests, charges filed by prosecutors, criminal complaints and indictments, imprisonment data, and prison releases” (Mosher, 2011, p. 65). It measures crime and crime control. Making official crime data open to the public increases trust between law enforcement and the community.Crime data aids governments in recognizing what is most important, determining the effectiveness of past policy details and deciding on the future use of resources. When it comes to validity and the reliability of crime data, “changing technology, information management systems or classification systems can make it unsuitable to compare data due to the different coverage of specific records, making it difficult to compare figures across time and space” (Ludwig, 2015). The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Justice Statistics are the two primary sources of government crime statistics but neither department fully addresses all areas needed for an accurate measurement of crime. However, the amount of crimes actually committed cannot be calculated due to underreporting and other factors, so this issue cannot be helped. Official crime data is crucial to consider because it gives so much insight into where resources need to be going and what improvements can be made to prevent more crime from occurring in the future. When crime data is reported properly, in a uniform way, it can help law enforcement understand the trends and patterns of major crimes, such as arson or larceny-theft. The Uniform Crime Report (UCR) was created to keep track of official crime data from law enforcement agencies. The UCR recognizes that some crimes are more important than others. For example, committing murder is worse than vandalism, so the UCR is split up into Part I offenses and Part II offenses. While much progress has been made, there are still many problem areas in collecting official crime data (Mosher, 2011). One major issue is that many crimes rely on victims reporting them and this does not always happen or the data that they provide may not always be accurate. The term “dark figures” is used to refer to this gap between the actual extent of crime committed and what is known by the police. For example, a domestic violence victim may not report the crimes of their spouse out of fear or for the safety of their children. Another issue with official crime data not being completely reliable is that many definitions of the crimes under the UCR are left to the discretion of the law enforcement agency or officer as to what to classify it as. A purse-snatching incident could be considered strong-armed robbery or regular robbery depending on how it is viewed by the agency reporting it. After considering both Baumer & Adams’ study (2006) and Miller’s research (2003), I am not sure many policy changes could be made without more research being considered. Baumer & Adams did not have as great an impact as they had hoped for other than reducing the intake population, which could be successful with more support.
