This exam consists of 10 Short Answer questions, worth 10 points each. Read each question very
carefully and type your response directly into the text box below the question. Your response
should not exceed one full paragraph of text but must completely answer all parts of the
question. At no time should you include quotes in your response. Only provide original
responses in your own words. Citations of course materials are neither required nor expected,
although you are welcome to refer to course materials in order to complete this test successfully.
For clarity’s sake, please observe the following meanings of terms:
“Describe”: When you are asked to describe something, please explain enough key
characteristics of that ‘something’ as it relates to our course materials to demonstrate that you
know what you are talking about.
“In your opinion”: When you are asked for your opinion, please state just enough facts about the
topic to demonstrate you recognize the topic from your work in the course, such as a definition
of terms from our course materials in your own words. THEN, go on to explain your perspective
as it relates to that topic. These questions call for well-considered opinions, but not analysis.
“Discuss”: When you are asked to discuss something, please explain the key characteristics of
that something to demonstrate that you know what you are talking about. THEN, provide a brief
analysis of those characteristics through a relevant lens of our course materials. These questions
call for well-informed analysis, but not opinions.
If you are not explicitly asked to respond ‘in your opinion’, to ‘describe’, or to ‘discuss’, then
simply answer the questions according to information presented in the course materials. Only do
so, however, in your own words.
1.
In your opinion, under what circumstances is political violence malum prohibitum violence?
Political violence malum prohibitum is violence conducted in such a manner that is not
specifically considered to be evil or morally unconscionable as it encompasses violent acts that
are a result of disagreements of prohibited behaviors that are deemed to be socially unacceptable,
therefore made illegal by the fortitude of legislation. There are many situations/circumstances
that would result in violence as a way of expressing political disparities; for example, the
prohibition of alcohol might result in the upheaval of initially law abiding citizens as their
freedoms and civil liberties are legislatively withdrawn, furthermore resulting in violence.

What is the significance of the following statement: “Extremism in defense of liberty is no
vice”?
This statement was made in 1964 by a presidential candidate by the name of Barry M.
Goldwater; as a result of the country’s current state of anti-communism, this statement supported
Goldwater’s strong beliefs that his cause would be that of complete morality to avert
communism. This statement also supports Goldwater’s intense beliefs in a distinct separation
between good and evil and whatever the situation presented is, the result with be justified. This
statement is also profoundly important to terrorists that believe the violence’s in which they
participate in are in fact justified by their beliefs.
3.
Briefly discuss the significance of the tragedy at the 1972 Munich Olympics.
With varying perspectives of what International terrorism truly consists of, the tragedy at
the 1972 Munich Olympics which ended in the deaths of 11 Israeli athletes warranted the
thorough debate of from whose perspective terrorism would be defined; the terrorists’ or the
victims’? Further significance of this tragedy resulted in the forced definitions of different world
leaders on what they believed constituted of terrorism. The perspectives of the Western countries
seemed to have varied significantly from the perspectives of other world leaders in that felonious
acts were in fact deemed to be criminal acts but not specifically considered to be terrorist acts.
Other world leaders were noted to have argued that any person that is refused their most basic
rights can hardly be considered a terrorist when they result to violence in an attempt to liberate
themselves and their people.
4.
Briefly describe the purpose of “blacklisting” and other authoritarian measures during Red
Scares in the United States.
The purpose of blacklisting and other relative authoritarian measures during the Red
Scares in the United States were to essentially forbid and limit any further financial or
employment success to those whom vocalized their political beliefs and were actively involved.
During the Red Scares in the United States, it is understood that the main purpose of such scares
were to address the anticommunist crisis’s when leaders within the nation were threatened by
what they thought to be a communist rebellion. Other authoritarian measures that were taken by
leaders were the allowing of a multitude of raids, leaders of groups being arrested, offices of
perceived communists were shut down, and as was previously mentioned, after the third noted
Red Scare in the 1950’s national leaders graduated to the blacklisting of hundreds.
