In Computing terms, the “client” and “server” refers to computers
used for dierent purposes. A client is a small computer that
accesses the server through a network. For example, in an
organization an employee logs in to the client machine to access
the "les and and applications that are running on the server
machine. This type of architecture is also known as client-server
architecture which mainly focuses on the division of labour in an
organization. A server machine is a large – capacity computer that
can store a wide variety of "les such as applications and data
"les. There are various types of servers such as web server,
application server, "le server, database server, print server, proxy
server, game server, standalone server etc. A client can be
classi"ed into fat, thin and hybrid. A fat client supports both local
storage and local processing. A thin client is a less powerfull
machine with a minimum hardware installed. It usually utilizes the
recources of the host machine and relies on the server to perform
any data processing. The primary job of thin client is just to
graphically display the images provided by an application server.
A hybrid client processes localy but relies on the server for data
storage.
Some application servers may require users to log in from their
client machine in order to access speci"c application utilizing the
client-server architecture. The client machine cannot only access
the applications and data "les but they can also use the processor
of the server to perform certain tasks without having to add any
additional hardware resources to the client machine. The client

computer usually contains more end-users software than the
server computer. A server usually contains more operating system
components. Multiple users can log in to a server at the same
time. A client machine is simple and inexpensive whereas a
server machine is more powerful and expensive.
The main dierence between a client machine and a server
machine is in its performance. The client machines are considered
optimal for applications which require speedy start-up times. A
server machine is considered optimal for applications where the
emphisis is more on performance.

A client machine is a small computer with a basic hardware
con"guration whereas a server machine is a high-end
computer with an advanced hardware con"guration.
A client is a simple and less powerful machine whereas a
server is a powerful and expensive machine.
A client is used for simple tasks whereas a server is used for

an e-mail client is an application that enables you to send and
receive e-mail.
In the client-server programming model, a server is a program
that awaits and ful"lls the requests from client programs in the
same or other computers. A given application in a computer may
function as a client with requests for services from other
programs and also as a server of requests from other programs.
The client-server networking model does not require fancy or
state of art hardware to run eectively. Instead, most systems,
including home computers successfuly serve as clients or servers
on the internet every day. There some basic hardware and
software tools, which establish the network infrastructure and
communication protocols required to ensure network connectivity
between clients and servers.
The primary function of client-server system is to create a
division of labour between a centralized server and the individual
computers that are running your software. This model has a
number of bene"ts that help your small bussiness successfully to
create and market data and processor intensive applications in
the very competitive software market.
