As I mentioned in my reflection for BUS 611, I had the opportunity to take two courses
during summer school at Ashford University. Like BUS 611, OMM 618 gave me the opportunity
to learn more about some of the leadership and “behind the scenes” aspects of higher education.
As a Student Services Manager, I am responsible for a lot of the hiring and training for our
department. In any leadership role, I thought it would be valuable to have a good understanding
of some of the HR practices and policies in order to help me be a more component and effective
manager and leader. This course really helped me understand all the laws, policies and
procedures that surround the hiring and employee process. Helping ensure you have the right
employee in place for a position is just the first step in the HR process, so much more goes into
being an effective HR leader. Through this course and through the completion of the final paper
(artifact), I was able to articulate some of the components of the HR process and also meet two
of the program learning outcomes.
For this artifact, I was asked to complete an entire HR plan for recruiting, interviewing,
hiring and training for my current position, this also including job requirements, job description
as well as compensation plan. Though I currently hire for Academic Advisor and Lead Academic
Advisor position, our department receives a great deal of help from our human resources
department. I have never needed to create a plan like this and doing so for this paper really
helped me understand how much goes into this process and how important it can be to have
knowledge of this in order to ensure that you are not only following the proper policies and
procedures but that you are throughout and compliant. I am now more confident that I would be
able to use the knowledge gained from this course and this artifact to duplicate this process for

another position. I also feel that I am a more effective manager because I understand some
additional components of human resources and again how much goes into this entire process.
Through completing this course and artifact I was also able to meet two of the program
learning outcomes, “identify ethical leadership issues in student affairs in postsecondary
education and propose solutions and strategies to address these issues” and “identify how
learning and development theories can be implemented in daily practice within student affairs in
postsecondary education”. First, I needed to understand some of the challenges in creating this
plan and how current laws and procedures influence the hiring and employee process. In order to
ensure that I am maintaining this and being as ethical as possible, I needed to learn what those
laws and procedures are. It could be easy in creating and developing a description to develop
biases and unethical practices. I was also able to articulate in this paper how these HR
theories/procedures could be implemented in daily practice by actually developing this HR plan
for the Student Services Manager position. Not only was I able to provide solutions to challenges
and develop a hiring and training plan but I actually wrote about this for an actual position that
could be used by our HR or any HR department. Again, I was able to identify issues, provide
solutions, interpret policies and procedures (theories) and actually develop a hiring plan that
could be used for an actual position.
This course, like BUS 611 took me outside my comfort zone as far as course content as
well as readings, assignments and overall structure of the course. As developing leaders it is
important that student affairs professionals have this kind of knowledge. One of my suggestions
for the program faculty would be to find ways to incorporate these kinds of topics in future
