The first step in the research process is selecting a topic that is both interesting and manageable. For
this discussion, complete the following:
Review the Final Research Paper instructions in Week Five, and identify three potential research
topics.
Describe methods that may be helpful in identifying and narrowing your research paper topic.
Examine two scholarly sources that may prove valuable as you seek to defend your claims.
Address why scholarly sources should be used to support your writing on the selected topic.

The three potential topics will look into for my research papers are:
homelessness in the United States, Obesity and social media.
In order to identify the topic and narrow my research, I will need to decide
what I want to discuss about each of these topics. For obesity, I would
choose to focus on the increase of childhood obesity in America and the
concern it poses on our nations youth. This topic is important to me, as a
father I am concerned with my child’s health.
For the topic of homelessness, I will be focusing on the increasing amount
of veterans that becoming homeless. As a member of the Military I feel that
our country has the obligation to help those who are in need that have
sacriced everything to defend our country’s freedoms. To expand on this, I
will discussed the multiple programs and organizations available for our
veterans.
Social media is the wave of the future, for this topic I will explore the impact
it is having on our youth. Some topics I mat explore are cyber bullying,
internet privacy, and cyber crimes.

For each of these topics, I would research my selected topic, and look into
what I would specically like to research with these topics and see what I
am able to nd. If I cannot nd many references, or too many references I
may have to narrow my topic more or change directions.
Scholarly sources should be used for research because it is based on facts,
not beliefs or ideas.

Social Media
The introduction of new technologies has significantly affected the social lives of many. These changes,
which reflect how people use technology to interact, provide an example of trends that you might
examine in your Final Research Paper. For this discussion, identify a significant change that has
occurred in the way people communicate and share information, and reflect on the impact this change
has had on individuals and society in general today (local and global). Keep in mind that not all social
trends affect all groups in society to the same degree. In addition, examine the influence of social media
on an individual’s personal and professional pursuits.
Technology has significantly affected the social lives of many people in society. For example, I started
utilizing Facebook when I was 18 years old and Facebook is now how I keep in touch with my family
and friends I honestly barley pick up the phone to give them a call I generally message them on
Facebook or I will text message them. On the other hand when I communicate with my 85 year old
Grandmother I must call her because she refuses to use Facebook and just doesn’t understand how to
open or send text messages.
I feel that this has made a major impact on our society especially in the aspects of privacy. Social media
can be used as a surveillance system which can impact a person’s privacy. A person’s privacy can often
be determined by the person utilizing the social network and their knowledge of privacy and

surveillance. A person’s understanding of privacy and surveillance is generally driven by their
interactions with others, which are also shaped by relationships (Boyd, 2011). For example, one person
can have setting to where anyone can see what they are posting on Facebook, and another person can
have setting so that only his or her close friends can see what he or she posts.
In addition I feel that social media can have an impact on a person’s individual and professional
pursuits by influencing societal “Norms.” For example, our society is very obese and a lot of this can
be linked to the advertising of fast and fatty foods. Furthermore, there are even ads on Facebook and
other social networks and media for schools and even job opportunities. These ads can be very
appealing and even convince a person to attend a school or apply for a job.
