United States Name University Affiliation Instructor Date CASE ANALYSIS 2 The genesis of the case was the management of the Heart of Atlanta Motel which did not offer accommodation to the black customers. The managers filed a suit in the court seeking a declaration that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 provisions prohibiting racial declaration was more than Congress constitutional powers to regulate interstate trade under the commerce clause. The supreme court of the US upheld the federal district court judgment that the provision was constitutional as the Congress acted following its constitutional powers to regulate commerce. Consequently, the Supreme Court recognized the provisions which outlawed racial segregation and discrimination which despite being outlawed by the constitution, continued to be practiced by some states. Heart of Atlanta Motel v. the United States was a critical case because it upheld the power of the Congress to pass legislation under the commerce clause and overturned the Jim Crow system.
