Prior to the boom of social media through sites such as Facebook, professionals and psychologists had not found any relationship between the use of the internet and how human beings interacted socially. (Boneva et al., 2006), (Kraut et al., 1998). This, however, was bound to change as people continued to spend more time on social networking sites. Internet penetration has increased exponentially, as people continue to have a home internet connection. The use of smartphones is also at its highest and this has further enhanced the easy to join or access social media sites. As this continues to the case, prior research showing that social network does not interfere with human interaction may as well be outdated as it is imperative to view this from a different perspective, both socially and psychologically. Recent studies have verified that the use of social media has been associated with a decrease in face-to-face interaction which in turn leading to a deterioration of the quality of relationships as well as a decrease in the levels of intimacy among frequent users.
