The house repair analogy is an analogy used to describe an approach to counseling. This
analogy compares counseling to working on a house, more like renovation. According to
Hutchinson (2015), the house is divided into three levels: the client may live in any of the three
levels, and a different approach is used for the three levels. The first level is the ground floor. At
this level, the type of client is either a child or an immature adult who has immense problems in
accepting and putting up with the basic demands of life, while the second floor belongs to adults
mostly. These adults are living lives that are mature and self-sustaining, and self-supporting too.
The third floor holds the highly accomplished type, questioning life and its meaning along with

of courage, enabling them to relate more. By sensing what the client is thinking and feeling, I can
respond by relating to them and showing them empathy. For instance, one cannot have self-doubt
