Sampling Design
The company Mr. “S” Sports & Outdoors is experiencing profits in 2 of its San Antonio
stores, but losses in 1 of its San Antonio stores. To understand the reason for the profits and
losses of the San Antonio stores, the entire population of Mr. S stores is studied.
The population in this observational study is all the Mr. S stores in the United States.
Currently, there are 130 sporting goods stores, of which three are in San Antonio. The target
population are the stores in the area near San Antonio, meaning many of the stores in the South
and South West area. Stores in these areas will tend to sell the same hot items that correspond to
the climate of the area, the general demographic, etc.
Data Collection
To gather the data, a data mining approach is used. The style of marketing strategies used
by each company cannot be determined by observation or survey. Similarly, the sales of each
store cannot be determined by observation or survey. The Mr. S stores’ operation manager can
get this information from the information system of the company through its hierarchy. The
sample size chosen for this store is 100 stores. Gathering the data of marketing techniques and
sales for each store is not a tedious process, thus a sample size of 100 is possible; performing a
census study on this variable is also a possibility but a little more time taking.
Sampling Method
The sampling method used to create the sample is the stratified sampling method. Each
stratum is a state of operation for Mr. S stores. The number of states that Mr. S stores operates in
is determined; 100 is then divided by this number. This number represents the amount of stores

that need to be selected from each state. In each stratum, simple random sampling is used to
choose the stores for the sample.
Data Storage
The data recovered from the information systems department of Mr. S sports is stored in
an excel file. The sales are recorded in an excel file, while the marketing techniques are first
categorized into certain subgroups. Each subgroup is then assigned to each store with its
corresponding sales.
Sample Size
The sample size for the research study is calculating using a confidence interval.
Knowing the range of the confidence interval, the standard deviation, and the margin of error, the
sample size which ensures the confidence interval can be calculated. The estimated standard
deviation is 0.10 as it ensures that the sample size is large enough (Smith, 2013). In Appendix B,
the sample size is calculated to be 97 participants. The 97 sample size is rounded up to an even
number of 100, created using a stratified sampling method.
