Chemical Biology Final Exam Instructions: Given are eight (8) classes of hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon derivatives. - Look for one (1) compound under each of the class, and then do the following: 1. Identify the hydrocarbon or group of hydrocarbons in that compound, 2. Describe compounds in terms of the following: (a) Chemical Name, (b) Property/ies, (c) Sources, and (d) Applications/uses. ALKANES - Methane (CH4) 1. Aliphatic hydrocarbon - alkane. 2a. Methane 2b. Methane has a specific gravity of 0.554 which makes it lighter than air. It is slightly soluble in water and burns readily in air, forming carbon dioxide and water vapour. Moreover, the flame produced is pale, slightly luminous, and very hot. The boiling point of methane is -162°C (−259.6°F) and the melting point is −182.5°C (−296.5 °F). Also, its molecular weight/molar mass is 16.04 g/mol. In general, methane is very stable but methane content between 5 and 14 percent by volume mixed with air, are explosive. 2c. The major anthropogenic sources of methane are the production and combustion of natural gas and coal. In nature, wetlands are the major natural source of methane as it is produced by the anaerobic bacterial decomposition of vegetable matter under water. Other important natural sources of methane include termites (as a result of digestive processes), volcanoes, vents in the ocean floor, and methane hydrate deposits that occur along continental margins beneath Antarctic ice and Arctic permafrost ...
