Similarities between Shiite and Sunni Muslims
Muslim religion primarily preaches the concept of One Creator of the universe who must be
worshipped by whole humanity known as Allah. All the divisions and sects in Islam including
Shiite and Sunni believe in the worship of Allah who has no picture, no reflection or physical
appearance. The basic definition of Muslim is to have belief in one Allah, Quran, Prophets, The
Day of Judgment termed as Qayamat and the Angels appointed by Allah for completion of
various tasks. Shiite and Sunni Muslims have no disagreement on these terms. Another similarity
is the acceptance of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as the last prophet for whole universe. Five
pillars of Islam upon which there is harmony amongst sects is Tauheed (accepting the unity of
Allah; there is no other God but Allah), Praying, Fasting the month of Islamic year known as
Ramadan, charity for deserving people and Pilgrimage towards Mecca and Medina.
Difference between Shiite and Sunni Muslims
Although Shiite and Sunni Muslims have shared opinions on the definition of the Islamic terms
as described the Holy Book of Quran but there are numerous interpretation of the text because
Quran defines the terms and emphasize on the importance of application of these terms in this
life and the life hereafter but there is not enough detail about the methods of performing these
acts. Shiite and Sunni Sects interpret the text and Islamic details of performing major acts
differently which reflects in their opinions. Both sects pray to Allah but one Sunni Muslims pray
distinctively five times a day whereas Shiite Muslims pray three times. Shiite and Sunni fast for
the month of Ramadan which is 29 or 30 days but Shiite Muslims eat fifteen minutes later after
the Sunni Muslims. Shiite Muslims also recite different Kalma which is the declaration of
accepting the religion of Islam [About Religion (2015)].

Shiite Muslims believe that Hazrat Ali (RA) must have been appointed the successor and Caliph
of Islam after the death of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Hazrat Ali (RA) was the rightful
ruler. They also believe that other companions of Prophet Muhammad fought against Hazrat Ali
(RA) and conspired to replace the seat of Caliph to appoint Hazrat Abubakr (RA) as the first
Caliph. Shiite Muslims do not respect the teachings of three main companions of Propher
Muhammad named Hazrat Abubakar (RA), Hazrat Usman Ghani (RA), Hazrat Umar Farooq
(RA). Sunni Muslims disagree with Shiite on this concept and they believe that all companions
of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) were pious and respectful personalities. Shiite Muslims
emphasize on the concept of Imam more than Shiite Muslims [About Religion (2015)].
Role of Women in Islam
A woman in Islam is considered a very respectful personality and equality of rights of women is
emphasized but there is a slight diversification in the role of women. The concept of Hijab is the
unique attribute of a Muslim Women. It is forbidden in Islam for women to appear in public
without wearing a Hijab which is used to cover the head and face of women with a piece of
cloth. Although Islam provides equal rights to women in the context of morality and education
but there are particular fields in which women cannot participate. For example women cannot
openly provide opinion about the custody of children after divorce and women receives lesser
proportion from the property of his father as compared to her brother. The interpretation of
Islamic verses in Quran reflects the dominance of man over women [Safra Project (2015)].
