The writing describes the interrelation between health and cultural beliefs, and the existing health disparities. Lastly, the article offers recommendations on how existing practices could be changed. DIABETES AND THE AMERICAN INDIAN CULTURE Introduction to the problem and its significance Diabetes refers to a group of diseases that result from abnormalities in the production of the hormone insulin. The pancreas, an organ responsible for the production of insulin which helps the body store and use up excess sugar and fats, produces inadequate insulin leading to a condition known as diabetes. Unfortunately, diabetes has no known cure. Native Americans, particularly the American Indians have been subjects to health disparities, a factor that has significantly contributed to extremely high records of ailments, with type 2 diabetes being prevalent among the American Indian population. Type two diabetes occurs when an individual’s body fails to utilize insulin properly, a condition known as insulin resistance.
