Week 3 Assignment: MODERATION OR MEDITATION 2
Mediation in SPSS
Mediation, in statistical analysis, is the variable that aids in understanding the impact the
independent variable has on the dependent variable (Warner, 2013). Using IBM’s SPSS, a
multiple regression analysis, using the Barron and Kenny approach, was conducted on variables
taken from the Afrobarometer dataset. The research question guiding this analysis is “does
problems with public schools mediate the relationship between education category and trust in
government?”
It is important to notate that the mean of Q1 Age was taken from the Afrobarometer
dataset. The output is displayed in Table 5. From the output, the mean age of the respondents is
37.39 years of age with standard deviation of 14.863 years. The age of the respondent is critical
to the inferences made by the data analysis, as the discussion about the meaning of the findings
affect the respondent’s, by their decisions about government, education, etc. The dependent
variable is trust in government index and the independent variables are education category and
problems with public school. According to the Barron and Kenny approach and Laureate
Education (2017r), there are four steps to understand the impact of a mediating variable in a
multiple regression model. In the first step, shown in Tables 1A-C, a regression analysis is
performed on trust in government (dependent variable) and education category (independent).
Based on the results in Table 1C, education category does significantly predict trust in
government, b = -.212, t (7696) = -19.052, p < .000. The results also show that education
category has a negative impact on trust in government.
The second step, shown in Tables 2A-C, another analysis is performed on trust in
government (dependent variable) and problems with public school (mediating variable acting as
independent variable) to test for the relationship between the two criterions. Based on the results,
