War and Sickness High School Richard Macfarlane Introduction High school history textbooks are dull, detached, and focused on bare facts. The intent of this chapter is to infuse History with a more personal historical perspective by reading and writing poetry and fiction. Reading fiction allows students to develop a sense of what it actually felt like to be in a particular situation and how people reacted emotionally to the circumstances described. While many facets of human life could be explored through literature, Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen write about their experiences in World War One as soldiers. Their poems provide students with a personal account of what the war was like and the effects it had on soldiers, like shell shock. Through their poetry, students could examine a number of issues including opposition to war, defiance, or camaraderie. Literature allows students to develop historical empathy, a strong sense of what it actually might have been like to have those experiences, in a way that textbooks cannot. This chapter would be ideal following a unit on the Great War in a Social Studies class, but would be interesting in a Language Arts class as well.
