Writing 101
Dr. Briana McCoy
Malcolm X is known as one of the most articulate and powerful leaders of black America
during the 1960s. Being a street hustler who was convicted of robbery in 1946, Malcolm X spent
seven years in prison. Prison is where he had a revelation to acquire himself a homemade
education, or what he refers to as his prison studies. Malcolm X found himself wanting to deepen
his knowledge and understanding of America. His urge to further his education while in prison
was stamped deeply into his heart and mind. Malcolm X’s motivation was seen as he didn’t
expect to learn from any particular teacher or institution. He acquired all of his knowledge by
reading books all the time. From his prison studies and by reading every book he got his hands
on, Malcolm X realized how much better he could express his intellectuality. From this, one can
see that reading makes you a better learner, writer and helps initiate thoughts that lead into new
writing techniques.
