Surname 1 Student’s name Professor’s name Course title Date Friends (1994-2004) A scrutiny of friends depicts a society which shows several variations in the way history has changed in terms of several hegemonic social constructs which include gender roles, racism, friendship practices and social classes. The gender roles show no change from those in America’s history as men are portrayed as authoritative while women are supposed to be submissive. There are specific tasks set out for men while women who try to assert their independence are seen to be strict and masculine (Marshal, 87). Although there is a tendency to cross the culturally restrictive boarders, it is done with a lot of unease. The male characters constantly try to assert their masculinity throughout the series. Despite exhibiting some feminine characteristics, men in the series are mainly displayed as heterosexual. Joey, one of the main characters, exhibited masculinity in his sexual advances towards women. He always wanted to remain in control and initiated relationships with women mainly for sex. Joey also liked using his muscular body to take control of situations. This can be seen when he offered to beat up two bullies who were harassing Chandler and Ross, who were his friends. Joey’s sexuality and will to take over conflicts under slight provocations were his way of Surname 2 asserting masculinity.
