A user calls and says that she is able to work on all applications except Internet explorer
web browsing. When she tries to access a website, she receives this error: "Page cannot be
displayed—cannot find server or DNS error."
What can be the cause of the problem and on which layers can the problem exist? Provide
possible solutions to each cause of the problem.
Cause of problem:
There can be many causes of this problem e.g.
The DNS server is not accessible.
Typing error can be present in address.
DNS server does not have citation for website's domain.
When IE browser is connected with Web server and IP address list is returned from DNS server
comprises on many IP addresses, IE tries to create TCP connection by using these IP addresses in
same order. Finally when TCP connection is effectively established, IE browser uses that IP
address to send HTTP request.
Though, by default IE only tries to use first five IP addresses that it takes from DNS server when
it tries to establish TCP connection. If it fails in creating connection to all IP addresses, the
following problem “Page cannot be displayed—cannot find server or DNS error" can occur.
The problem exists on transport layer. The possible solutions to this problem are as following:
Refresh that page that is failed to load. If the page reloads, you just had a temporary
interval in service that occurs with mostly providers. Try to refresh the page again and
again to check if the error is resolved or not.
Check the spelling of page address. Sometimes an error in url address might cause this
error.
