PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS 2
INTRODUCTION
Happiness is defined as a state of living a good life in which one flourishes rather than
simply enjoying an emotional wellbeing. The quality of life should then be based on larger
things such as goals and accomplishments to make one enjoy their lifestyle. Martin Seligman, a
well known psychologist has defined happiness in three forms. These include; pleasant life,
engaged life and meaningful life. In pleasant life, one has the emotional ability to enjoy their life
through positive emotions that occur hence increasing the intensity and durations of pleasure.
This form of happiness is described as short term. Secondly, engaged life is where a person
contributes their strengths to their family, career and other duties that help a person to have
increased wellbeing. The meaningful is defined by the actions of a person being engaged in
something than is larger than life such as a community and religion. The main difference
between the three states of happiness is examination of life. One cannot claim that they are
happy without examining some of the conditions of their lives. This paper compares and
contrasts the three forms of happiness. (Magyar-Moe, J. L. 2009).

individuals to have a regular sporting activity that enhances the metabolism of the body to have a
smooth flow that is usually short lived. A pleasant life is one where a person does not have any
form of stress or psychological trauma. Engaging in alcoholism and other forms of behaviors
helps to improve the performance of individuals within the society. In the pursuit of pleasant
experiences, people tend to accumulate experiences that make them happy in the short term
hence increase their performance within the society. Although positive psychotherapy teaches
people to find ways to increase their emotional experiences in life, it does not teach them to use
their inner strengths in conducting both religious and community matters that are larger than the
people. It is important to have external regulation of behavior that is developed through self
control to help improve ones performance in their livelihood. (Sirgy, M. J.2012).
ENGAGED LIFE
An engaged life occurs to an individual when they are specifically using certain strengths
in daily basis. These strengths can range from use of talents to kindness, perseverance and
curiosity that help a person to accomplish specific accomplishments. People who use their
attention to improve the wellbeing of others tend to have an increased level of emotional
performance. For this reason, people are advised to increase the usage of their signature strengths
in order to be happier with what they do. This will not only increase ones performance over time
but also enhance their contribution in the workplace.
