From an objective standpoint, even the most critical scholars must acknowledge that Donald J. Trump undeniably broke new ground as a candidate in the 2016 Presidential Election; the primary point of contention, then, occurs when individuals disagree about whether or not Trump’s unprecedented campaign was progressive or regressive. However, upon thorough examination, it becomes evident that Trump— as a candidate and, now, as the 45th President of the United States— is an unprecedented threat to the heart and soul of American politics: legitimate democracy. Trump, from the moment he entered the race in 2015, made no effort to conform to political conventions; in fact, Trump actively resisted the formalities Americans expect of a presidential candidate and, as such, was initially written off by many as “another long-shot candidate” (Levitsky & Ziblatt 53). It appeared, initially, that Trump’s campaign would dissolve, when one of the more qualified candidates proved their worth over his platform of “wealth and celebrity” (Levitsky & Ziblatt 53).
