Essay Proposal: Community
Human beings are social beings who rarely live alone. A Community refers to the unity
of members living together as they share the basic conditions of a common life and is not tied
down one particular interest within a society. It is a basic requirement of existence to have social
bonds uniting individuals to others. The most basic form of human beings’ social life is the
family. A wider social structure that develops from more public ties is the community. The
community includes a population where the daily life of an individual involves the contact and
the dependence on other members. To support my definition of community I will reference
Chimamanda Adichie’s ‘the Danger of a Single Story’, the poem ‘Alone” by Maya Angelou and
the article by Mandy Len Catron.
The poem Alone by Maya Angelou supports my concept of community as it expresses
the need for human beings to be interdependent and clearly shows that humans are social beings
dependent on their fellow beings. “There are some millionaires with money they can’t use. Their
wives run around like banshees. Their children sing blues. They’ve got expensive doctors to cure
their hearts of stone but nobody, no, nobody can make it out here alone.” Maya describes a
situation where despite millionaires having money they cannot use it without their dependence
on others, clearly showing how interdependent human beings are.
Chimamanda’s the danger of a single story describes the most obvious problem of the
single story or one perspective which leads to default decisions, assumptions and conclusions
that are more often incomplete leading to misunderstandings and a lack of knowledge of the
experiences of others. Individuals are dependent of each other in a community hence
understanding that there are different stories within a community is essential for
interdependence.
