A tune that has lyrics with a profound social sense is “Where Is The Love?” by the Black
Eyed Peas. This group began teamwork on “Where Is the Love” back in December of 2001; after
the protests regarding colored faces. Massive emotions and topics of the song derive from the
set’s replication of police shooting persons on the streets in the United States as well as the active
caution the United States commenced to contest discrimination. The tune is influential in what it
represents; it expresses anti-hate and how tainted the society is in regards to love. The lyrics
What’s wrong with the world, mama/People livin’ like they ain’t got no mamas.. is clear on the
world’s situation.
Even though beneath one can make the association to societal standards, feminism and
family structure, our mothers (“mama”) to be precise are vital in learning life lessons and what’s
wrong from right. The way we are brought up poses a huge impact on how we act and the people
we are. Now with different family structures the norm is not always that of you learning right
from wrong from our parents. Many times the interactions are not there between young child and
parent or it comes down to lack of social skills due to the new “technological age”. Either way
people are no longer following the simple rules such as “Treat others the way you want to be
treated” or “Don’t do anything your parents (mama) wouldn’t be proud of”.
Humanity is at present hooked to social media. People no longer interacting with each
other because everything is done through the internet, social media has also become a source of
negative information and drama. People obsess over celebrities and the latest Hollywood drama.
Instead of focusing on the positives in life people instead feed on the drama. This also means that
people are making now effort to resolve conflicts which further leads to trauma and problems.
But if you only have love for your own race, Then you only leave space to discriminate
And to discriminate only generates hate.
This lyric brings awareness to the societal issue that is racism. Although we may not want
to admit it in North America racism is still prevalent and an important issue within our society.
Countless issues involving racism, police brutality, and discrimination occur every day to
minority’s populations. The black lives matter movement has been a major stepping stone in
bringing awareness and making change to the ongoing issues and discrimination black
communities are facing. However, racism involves and effects many other races and people
therefore not matter the race everyone should be treated equally with equity.
Music is an extremely important tool for which social change can be brought about.
Music is an integral part of numerous cultures. Worldwide we find numerous cultures with deep
connections to music. With music we can express and relate to ourselves, our feelings, and our
beliefs. This also means that music can be used as an effective mean to bring about social
change.
