Instructions:
Complete a brief analysis that includes a description of the Healthvana innovation, a
determination of the type of innovation, and Herzlinger’s six-factor analysis to assist in
assessing the potential impact of the Healthvana innovation using Miller’s Impact
Assessment Framework.
1. Describe the innovation. Describe the innovation and the problem it addresses.
Healthvana is an online patient smartphone application that helps engage patients with
their health information (particularly their STI status/test results) in a much more effective
and quicker way. This innovation’s goal is to securely, effectively, timely, and accurately
deliver test results and reminders to patients and help STI positive patients get treated
sooner. The treatment of STI’s as quickly as possible is essential to prevent transmission
to other individuals and per the study, there was a reduced amount of days from
notification of infection to treatment (Cohen, Zimmerman, Prelip, & Clik, 2017).
2. Determine the type of innovation. Determine and justify whether the innovation is
sustaining or disruptive.
This innovation is a sustaining innovation because while the application is a new
advancement, patients were still being notified via telephone call or text message
previously. The innovation does not change the fact that patients are being notified but
rather improves the process and streamlines efficiency.
3. Analyze the innovation. Complete a six-factor analysis of the innovation (based on
Herzlinger’s “Innovating in Health Care—Framework”).
Who is a foe? How much power do they
have to help or hurt the new venture?

Structure
Who is a friend? Who is a foe? How much
power do they have to help or hurt the new
venture?
Friend:
- I believe that the physicians treating
patients with STI’s along with clinic
workers would be supportive of this
innovation as it would assist in
efficient and prompt treatment.
- I also would believe that other at
risk populations, like the gay
community as discussed in this
article, would be supportive of this
as it would help prevent additional
transmission (Cohen et al., 2017).
Financing
How is the innovation reimbursed? Does the
innovation use appropriate sources for
financing? What are those sources?
Unknown; this was not discussed in the
article. I would hope that insurance would
support and back the download of the
application and that the healthcare
institutions utilizing the app would pay a
yearly fee to distribute.
Public Policy
Public policy variables could have a
significant impact on the implementation of

How relevant is each variable in directing
public policy for the problem the innovation
addresses? Examples of variables include
political environment, stakeholder dynamics,
regulatory and legislative process dynamics,
and biases of key policy makers.
this application if there were biases toward
the community that the application targets
to assist.
Making sure that HIPAA is being complied
with while using the app is important and is
something that would need to be evaluated
and addressed by key regulatory bodies
and policy makers.
Technology
When is the opportune time to invest in the
technology? Who are the competitors?
This innovation is targeting a particular
population of “individuals who grew up
during the digital age and therefore who
are most familiar with online
communication…” (Cohen et al., 2017). One
would think that with the fast-paced
technology environment that we are living
in, it would be imperative to evaluate
applications like this one and understand
how it can help patients and also help profit
organizations themselves.
Consumers
How does the innovation address
consumers’ increased sense of
empowerment and lack of leisure time?
For patients/consumers to receive their test
results, reminders, and other notifications
quickly and securely, it could significantly
increase their sense of ownership to their
own health.
Accountability
How does the innovation meet the various
demands for accountability?
The Aids Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and
providers realize the importance to notify
patients as soon as possible with positive
test results, so the fact that they want to
implement a more effective and useful
application to deliver these results to
patients shows accountability.
The need for patients to download the app
and engage in test results shows an
accountability need on the patient side as
well.
4. Assess the impact. Use Miller’s Impact Assessment Framework (IAF), described in the
IAF guide, to complete a quick impact assessment of the Healthvana case.
First, complete the “scan” step of an impact assessment for the technology
innovation (see the “Methodology for Applying the Impact Assessment Framework”
section in the IAF guide). Scan all eight dimensions to ensure you have a broad
perspective on dimensions that are not normally taken into consideration. As you
scan the innovation, consider which outcomes apply to your innovation. Use the
table below to record the results of your scan. You may delete the outcomes that do
not apply. Include your questions or statements in the “Outcomes” column. Every
dimension should have at least one outcome.
Second, select two of the dimensions that you think are most impacted by the
innovation. Evaluate and justify how these two dimensions are most impacted based
