Why is the Koala considered to be at risk of extinction by 2050?
The Koalas face possible extinction by 2050 due to the ongoing encroachment of their
habitat. The public has continued to clear forests, which are homes for Koala and provide their
food (Cockburn, 2021). The behavior exposes Koalas to insufficient habitat for their survival and
reproduction. Without proper intervention by the government to protect the continued
deforestation for private or public use, the Koala may be extinct by 2050. Other factors
contributing to possible Koala extinction include wildfires. According to Loane (2021), 2019-
2020 bushfires contributed to the destruction of significant Koala habitats. The reduction of their
habitat exposes them to possible drought and deaths.
The Koala SEPP 2021, according to the Deputy Premier Mr. Barilaro, "balances the
interests of farmers and the protection of koalas and their habitat". Why are there now two
SEPPS, and how do they achieve this balance?
There are two SEPPS to cater for a balance between private citizens’ rights and Koalas’
interests and survival. The government identifies that both people's and animalsrights must be
balanced to reduce unnecessary conflicts. The balance is achievable by changing the initial
guideline on land utilization for private use and conservation for Koalas’ survival. According to
Barilaro et al. (2021), the SEPPS seeks to give significant control of land use, especially where
there are reduced incidences of development. The plan seeks to ensure that it retains restricted
use policy for over 95% of the land, which registers high development activities (Barilaro et al.,
2021). The strategy will boost the Koala population by stabilizing their existence and ensuring
significant protection of their habitat through controlled logging.
