Turnout Gear
Turnout gears are the primary source of protection for fighters during a fire accident.
As a result, turnout clothing is designed to provide maximum protection during fire fighting.
Nonetheless, the key requirements of comfort and protection contradict the performance of
turnout gears. In this case, turnout design, material, and evaluation determine the
conformability and performance of turnout gears. Notably, the structural turnouts have the
outer shell, moisture barrier, and thermal lining. However, these structural turnouts are
limited by the types of fire conditions.
Outer shell
This is the outer layer of the turnout gear. Primarily, the outer shell is designed to
protect fire-fighters from direct heat and frames or convection. Also, the outer layer protects
the body from cuts and thermal conditions. In this case, the fabric in the outer layer can
withstand high temperatures. Nonetheless, its limited such that it can wear out when exposed
to flames for long. Unfortunately, this can lead to serious burns.
Moisture Barrier
The outer shell is followed by the moisture barrier. Chiefly, the purpose of the
moisture barrier is to protect the body from harmful liquids and acids. Also, the outer layer
protects the body from pathogens and hot moisture. Despite its level of protection, the
moisture barrier is subjected to some limitations. For example, its performance is limited to a
period of exposure time. Liquids can harm the skin when exposed for long. Also, it is made
of fragile components. As a result, the moisture barrier should be inspected regularly.
Thermal Liner
The thermal liner protects fire fighters from radiation, thermal and convectional heat.
As a result, materials used in the thermal liner provide thermal protection from ambient heat.
