Throughout the recent history of the last one hundred years Colonialism has proved to be in part
a good thing for the world. It has shown to be at times violent with nations fighting war after
war. But it also has brought numerous different cultures together. It has also helped to stop the
genocide against people of different faiths and walks of life around the world. No matter how
controversial Colonialism is in History it has proved to be a positive thing as a whole and it has
helped to develop and modernize the world.
1. Negatives of Colonialism
The roots of slavery quite often are varied and extensive, but often go hand in hand with
Colonialism. What happens when a country invades and controls another nation or area, the
controlled nation or area is forced to give up food, goods, and people usually by force. This has
happened throughout history and it is very well written down and documented.
Slavery has been used as a tool of colonialism all over the world. It is not uncommon that the
people of the newly acquired territory will be forced into slavery to pay the debts of the war and
to pay for the goods coming in to the country, clear out the land for the people that will surely
come in, and it is a form of subjugation as a way to show the people that the new ruler reigns
supreme now.
It is well documented that the longest running slave trade is the Arab Slave Trade. The Arab
Slave Trade was quite extensive with roots stretching from Europe, East Africa, and India. It is
estimated that in over 1500 years over 20 million people were captured and sent to Arab world, it
is not including the over 1 million people that were captured by Muslim pirates in the seas of the
Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
The Atlantic Slave trade is estimated at sending over 11 million people from West Africa to the
Americas over 350 years. It was inherently needed because as the Europeans were colonizing the
Americas, the Native American people succumbed to the illnesses and diseases they had never
been exposed to in the past, such as the measles and small pox. These illnesses were common
place among the old world and developed immunities in too. This and the harsh environment that
the Native Americans were force to put up with led to a lack of population, and a lack of people
to help farm and irrigate the land.
A. The Migration of people.
The migration of people was another negative that came about from Colonialism and the
aftermath of the conquest of their land. (Marker, 2003) This came about because when an area or
country is taken over by the superior country the ones that are hurt the most are the average
people. They are forced to learn new laws and sometimes even a new language, it has also been
recorded in history that the people of that land are forcibly evicted and moved to a new area,
others just leave voluntarily due to frustration. This led people to go out in search of other land to
settle, and it brought them into conflict with other people, and brought them in to direct
competition for the resources in that area. These migrations have led to small conflicts and full
fledge wars. .

B. Endless Wars.
The fact that constant wars being fought over a parcel of land or country is another byproduct of
colonialism, and the aftermath of when a country is trying to take control over another country.
This has devastating consequences for the people and environment of the area being fought over.
It is not uncommon for armies that have taken over a country or area to conscript an entire
population of the area for service in the army. This can range anywhere from baggage porters to
actually serving in a combat unit. Often times the newly arrived conscripts have to deal with
overwhelming discrimination, which has led to outright rebellions and civil war.
2. Positives of Colonialism
Colonialism has many negative aspects that are attributed to it. But you cannot overlook the
many positives that Colonialism has brought to the world as well. It has helped bring the world
together and become a much more close knit and connected world. Before when you would have
numerous little countries and fiefdoms, you now have 1 or 2 larger countries that have treaties
that facilitate trade between two.
A. Influx of new innovation.
An influx of new innovation and ingenuity has been one of the greatest of contributions that
colonialism helped bring to people of many different areas and continents. One of the greatest
contributions that the Arabs brought to the world was the widespread use and skill of Algebra
and modern day Arithmetic. This came about because of the influx of new ideas and people into
Mesopotamia in the 9th century At that point in time the city of Baghdad was the center of
learning in the Old World. This led to the expansion of chemistry and the use of mathematical
formulas.
B. Joining of societies.
Colonialism has helped bring together people and cultures that normally would never interact
with each other. One of the biggest aspects of colonialism that is left over from the act of being
colonized is the language. A number of countries around the world still use the language that
they used while colonized. This has been a boom for countries that have a number of different
languages and ethnic groups, because the language that is used to unify the country and the
government is the one they used while colonized. This is due to the fact that some ethnic groups
feel slighted for having to use another ethnic group’s language.
India is the best example to use for this because India has 1400 different languages; English and
Hindi are the main languages of the government. (Joseph, 2011).This is due to the fact that some
ethnic groups do not want to speak Hindi, and actually resent the use of it in government. So
English is the language that is most commonly used for the medium for commerce and
government in India, and it’s the main reason it is still taught in school to this day.
C. Education of the poor.
