Prompt 1: Nacimera Article
My impression of the Nacimera people is that they had strong beliefs that took a supernatural
form hence the need for shrines and rituals. Furthermore, they seem to have connected the
human body with their beliefs, for example, the ritualization consisting of body rites that took
place in secret and entailed being fully nude (Miner, 1956).
Based on the article by Miner, I think that the Nacimera people are located in North America,
explicitly residing in Yaqui, Canadian Cree, Carib, and Tarahumara of Mexico (Miner, 1956).
I found the possession of magical potions and charms in the shrine odd, and the lack thereof
means that the people were not capable of living in Mexico (Miner, 1956). The reason was the
fact that they could still live in the absence of the magical potions and shrine in their homes. I
found the practice of not throwing charms away upon use odd. The reason is because Miner
(1956) held that the charms would even overflow from the charm box and that they would
become so many that the people would forget the purpose of each charm. Therefore, they
believed in the charms but they didn’t even know what each one was about over time.
I found some of the beliefs familiar, particularly on the use of shrines and rituals as a means of
expressing their faith (Miner, 1956). The familiarity is drawn from a religious point, for example,
in Buddhists who use shrines referred to as Shinto (Bidwell, 2018). Furthermore, regarding
rituals, Christians have Baptism, Anointing of the ill, the Eucharist, and much more.
Furthermore, Miner holds that the Nacimera consider the body prone to disease, hence applying
rituals and shrines (Miner, 1956). A familiarity is drawn from the fact that Christians pray for the
sick and good health, showing that the human body is unwell (Bidwell, 2018). I found the
requirement of a gift to medicine men to provide the medical charm familiar (Miner, 1956). I
