Gender Inequality
Abstract
This essay is an examination of the issues that revolve around gender discrimination and
inequality. In this essay, I will list some of the basic issues that women face with regards
to the issue, and also address the extreme levels that gender discrimination can escalate
to. It is the conclusion of this essay and research that gender discrimination affects us all,
and if we are to move towards a cooperative, inclusive and civilized society than gender
discrimination has to end.

Gender Inequality
Gender inequality today remains a significant and detrimental barrier to human
development. The disadvantages that women and girls face relate to issues with health,
political representation, education, and the labor market. Gender inequality is a global
issue as those countries that have the most gender inequality, also exhibit the highest
levels of underdevelopment. Gender inequality is going to have to be addressed and
overcome by critical policy intervention, proactive thinking, and focused public policy
aimed at overcoming the systematic disadvantages and discrimination against women.
According to the most recent statistics, women earn 77% performing the same job
and carrying the same responsibilities as men (National Committee on Pay Equality
2014). In addition, to this almost 25% percent wage gap, women face glass ceilings
when it comes to promotions and being considered for the leading positions within their
fields. Women who have children are treated even more unequally because there are the
issues of childcare and the need to take be home when children are sick. Finally, those
jobs that are still largely considered "women's work" such as teaching and nursing are
among the lowest paying jobs.
Violence continues to be extremely focused against women. In certain
underdeveloped countries women do not have even the basic human right to be safe and
protected and are treated simply as property. In developed countries, women are often
blamed or questioned in a manner that implies the violence towards them was somehow
their fault: They put themselves in that situation or how they were dressed invited an
assault. Often this stigma of abuse prevents many women from coming forward for help,
