How to have constructive conversation 2
Part One
The speaker of this TED talk talks about the art of having a constructive conversation regardless
of the parties involved and setting of the communication. She says that in today’s world where we
are more connected than ever before, we seem further apart politically and ideologically . The
speaker says this is a skill that we need more of but seem to have less of regardless of the many
ways we have to connect nowadays.
The speaker of “How to have a constructive conversation” Julia Dhar, who is a world debate
champion and a business strategist says that we need to figure out how to go into a conversation
with the aim of making progress rather than looking for victory. She goes ahead and shares three
essential features of productive disagreements. She says that to have a constructive conversation
with anyone regardless of differences in beliefs, ideas and political affiliations, one party must be
open to the idea of curiosity over class, treat the conversation as a climbing wall and not a cage
fight and are able to anchor in purpose. These are the three essential features of a productive debate.
Mastering these techniques will sharpen one’s argument and strengthen the relationships.
Step Two: Taking Notes
During the first 30 seconds of this TED talk, the speaker had already grabbed my attention with
her presentation skills and the fact that she was speaking on a very relatable topic that does not
seem to get much coverage. She manages to pique the interest of the audience and keep them
listening all the way to the end of the TED talk. Therefore, it can be concluded that the strengths
of this presentation are that the topic is relatable and can be applied in basically any situation that
requires human interaction. The presenter also managed to articulate her points well and hold the
audience's attention for as long as the TED talk last.
