Occupational Safety and Health Act
Among the 10 Occupation Safety and Health Act (OSHA) standards, the second, referred to as
general standard 1920.1200, is the one that poses the most risk to employees (Connolly &
Crowell, 2017). The rationale is that the standard relates to the communication on hazardous or
poisonous chemicals at the workplace. Consequently, all these dangerous substances produced,
released, or sourced by the employer must be labeled and communicated to employees (Connolly
& Crowell, 2017).
Compared to other health concerns at the workplace, this poses the most risk in the absence of
proper protection from these hazardous substances; the impact could occur at a larger scale.
Basically, unlike the fall protection, which could affect a few employees and the effect being
perceived immediately, hazardous substance exposure could take a much longer time to discover
its leak. Therefore, as time passes, more and more employees become affected, and by the time
of discovery, significant damage has already occurred (Connolly & Crowell, 2017). Some of the
effects take the form of illnesses such as cancer, organ failures, genetic mutations, birth defects,
and much more. The International Labor Organization report has also established that in most
cases, the patients that suffer from these illnesses usually have permanent effects because of the
long exposure, and some die as well (International Labour Organization, 2021). Some of cancer-
causing chemicals listed in the study include; silica, asbestos, solvents, dyes, endocrine-
disruptive chemicals, pesticides, perfluorinated chemicals, endocrine-disruptive chemicals, and
much more (International Labour Organization, 2021). Consequently, it is valid to conclude that
the hazard communication standard under OSHA poses the most significant risk to employees.
