GRIEF 2
Grief
Is this an accurate description of grief in your experience?
Grief cannot be defined in a better way than how this article has described it. The author uses
an image of a wrecked ship to represent a broken life with memories of how good life was before
the grief. Significantly, the victim has to hold on to the existing wrecks of life. Additionally, the
author describes grief as a sequence of sad events which occurs 10 seconds apart. I agree with his
description of grief and various events which trigger grief, such as music or pictures.
What is an example of a “piece of wreckage” that you have or could hold onto?
Grief is accelerated by various factors that the author is referring to as wreckage. Multiple
factors trigger different forms of distress. When experiencing grief, I would hold on to the waste,
such as paintings and pictures. Songs could also remind me of the lowest moment, especially
when I am resting in the house; therefore, I avoid them. The image allows me to forget the
reason for grief, thus separating the waves.
How does reading this help someone who is grieving (if at all?)
The reading allows one to understand various waves causing grief and how one can avoid them.
Further, the reader understands that there are multiple wreckages that they can hold onto to
relieve them from distress.
Three things you can do to help someone who is grieving
Being a good listener to the grieving party.
Offering words that can heal a grieving heart.
Being available and staying connected to the victim.
What is something on the list that I think would have helped me when I was
grieving and why?
